Penticton
has been Verla's home for 57 years, and she hopes to continue
residing in this
beautiful city. One of the things Verla wanted to do when she
retired
was to learn to paint. Prior to that time Verla had ony painted
"walls and ceilings".
Verla and her
husband Alex had been spending winters in Mesa, Arizona. After
a few years they arranged accommodation for Grace and Gerry Lester
in their
park. Knowing Grace was an accomplished artist, it was a
wonderful opportunity for Verla to take up this hobby. In 1987
they
both attended a Tole painting class, and that was followed by
purchasing necessary equipment for oil painting. After painting
three pictures with her on the patio Verla decided she had to learn
to mix
the colours herself, and she's always been grateful for Grace's help.
There were about 35 artists in the Palette Club, and they had an Art Show
every year. Verla also painted on thin slabs of rock--mostly birds.
During two summers in Penticton Verla took out library books to learn as much as she could about watercolours, and in 1992 on returning south she attended the Mesa Arts Center for lessons--a wonderful facility. The next winter both Grace and she enrolled, and Verla learned so much from those lessons, being a beginner. Due to Alex' illness they sold their place in 1997, returned to Penticton and that fall moved to Sandbridge. After a time Verla joined the Sandbridge Watercolour Group. They all helped each other and then Bernie Cattani gave instruction and they all learned so much from him. His friend, Angie McIntosh, painted with the group a few times, and since Bernie's death she has been with them on a regular basis. Verla feels so fortunate to have her professional help. Verla says she gets so much enjoyment from this hobby--and what a pleasure it is to paint with such a congenial group! Return to Artists Return to Art Groups Return to WorldArtTours.net > |
