Local Artist William
at William's Restaurant,
In
Yangshou
I journeyed to Yangshou village for several
days. This little village must be the Paris of China. It is
filled with sidewalk cafes and lovely little shops. Most people
just take a Li River cruise from Guilin, stop at the Crown Caves in
Misty Village and then journey on to Yangshou for the afternoon and bus
back to the city. Smart cultural travelers journey to Yangshou
and relax there for several days and take in all of the sites. I
enjoyed the many sights in and around this village such as Moon Cave
Village and journeyed further up the Li River. When locals found
out I was an artist they took me to meet their resident artist
William. At the time he and his family lived in the local art
museum dedicated to a famous early 20th century traditional Chinese
landscape painter. He took me to his restaurant and I became
friends with him and his family. He made this lovely Chinese
calligraphy painting for me and then he took me to local villages where
he liked to paint. We took the boat to Fuli and then bused to
Xingping. These are places I would return to paint on subsequent trips.
