Painting with Brian Simons
Last November, several of us from
Penticton headed
down to Victoria to paint again with inspiring artist Brian Simons.
He has this great method of squinting at your image to make sure you
get the main tonal values for your
image and doing an underpainting in burnt sienna. This is likely
a method often used by
the Group
of Seven,
who are some of McIntosh's most favourite painters.
See here
a CBC video on Frederick H. Varley. One of Angie's teachers in
grade 5 at Central Elementary School in Kelowna, showed the class
pictures of the works by the Group
of Seven and said that she was the granddaughter of FH
Varley--a connection to the famous artist that made quite an impression
on Angie, even back when she was only 10 years old, a connection Angie
has been trying to verify recently with relatives of FH Varley. Back to
technique--this burnt sienna layer gives you your
midtone layer.
You then lift off your highlight with a damp flannel rag and you get
the lightest light areas. Then you glaze in the darks. Once you
are happy with the structure of your underpainting you start
laying the lovely local colour working your way up to the lightest
colours. If things are still looking good then you add your
finishing details. It is a wonderful method of painting and
Brian
is successful at getting even beginners to complete a painting during
the weekend. Friend Mija
and her daughter who have never painted in acrylics came down for the
workshop and finished some beautiful pieces. If you can get to Victoria
you should take
one of Brian's workshops which he
holds monthly. Check out his website here. If you can't leave
the Okanagan, Angie is going to lead several weekend worshops for the
Okanagan School of the Arts during this year to
teach even beginners
this method. Contact the Okanagan
School of the Arts to register. To the left is a street scene by

MEADOWLARK FESTIVAL PENTICTON:Last
spring after
a
busy time painting in Mexico, and journeying up Vancouver Island and
through the Inside passage to Prince Rupert and Stewart, Angie worked
on
acrylics and watercolours and painted with Stewart artists for a few
days. Angie led a plein-aire paint out May 17th, 2008 at the Meadowlark
Festival organized by
OSCA in the South Okanagan.
She was delighted that ecoligist,
writer, and philosopher Don Gayton agreed to explain the habitat,
biology and ecology of the region to the group of ten artists who went
to paint on the
Okanagan River in BC. The group was interested in hearing about
the
projects to restore the sockeye salmon to Skaha Lake and to return some
of the river to a more natural state. Here
is an acrylic painting
of the location that they painted at with the Meadowlark group which is
the only remaining natural section of Okanagan River left
where salmon can spawn in the sandy river beds. While
this painting is gone now, if you like the image please
contact Angie for notecards. Tragically the river was channelized
and dyked in the 1950's. Look at
some of the paintings
of this region. Artists wishing to help protect the fragile
Okanagan habitat are asked to join
Angie to discuss organizing a paintout during the 2009 Meadowlark
Festival. For more
information contact Angie.

ART RETREAT OF
THE NORTH
Artist Angie McIntosh has created a
simple rustic painting studio in an
old house in Stewart
BC
which is near some of the most scenic
painting locations
of Western Canada and Alaska, in the
beautiful Pacific Northwest. In the summer
of 2008 artists from
all around gathered together to paint in this
amazing inspiring location and join McIntosh for a painting
retreat. It is wonderful to be in the north in the summer and early fall to
paint. If you wish to
participate next year contact
McIntosh
. Remember the wonderful old days when Group
of Seven artists
inspired
each other on painting trips to the Canadian countreyside? Angie
was
also inspired
by walking through Renoir's home in southern France. The comraderie and
inspiration felt and created by the artists who met at Renoir's home
must have been amazing. Seeing the art works left in the rooms by
his
artist friends who would visit and paint moved her and so she is trying
to create a similar environment right here in northern BC. Click here to
learn about joining McIntosh as an artist in residence at her art retreat in Stewart, BC, in
northern Canada, minutes from Alaska.
Please note that the Art Retreat of the North is not
available for commercial rental or as a B&B--it is Angie's place of
art and
creativity. If you wish to work there or join other artists there
you must contact Angie first. Email or phone in Canada 250
