Stewart 2011  PICTURES COMING!
At the end of August 2011 Angie headed up to Stewart for a few weeks of painting which would coincide with the annual Stewart Bear Festival.  After a long wet summer, some sunshine arrived with Angie.  The first week, renowned oil painter, Jerry Markham joined Angie for some great plein air painting. You can read the fantastic 10 page article about him in the April 2011 issue of International Artist here.  We were going to do our first painting near the Berendon Glacier at the top of the Salmon Glacier Road and we couldn't because there was a nice sized beige grizzly bear chowing down on a bag of garbage in the bushes.  He had obviously gotten it from the mining site down below near the glacier lake.  Needless to say we found a different site to paint a few miles below where we caught the north tail end of the Salmon Glacier.  It was a lovely sunny day and we had some great days painting:  down at the log yard  along the estuary of the Bear River, at the Portland Canal estuary, and along the Salmon River valley.  After Jerry left I had a wonderful day painting the Salmon Glacier and the lovely alpine flowers uptop in the sunshine with Callie from Stewart.  Then a few artists from Stewart arrived, Mariad and her friend Dianne, as well as Pat from way out the Blackwater out of Quesnel and Mija flew in from Calgary.  We had a delightful time.  All of us were inspired to get out and do alot of great work in acrylics and watercolours.
More to come soon.....  and read about previous trips below

Osborne Bay boatsIn the summer of 2010, McIntosh continued to be busy working  with artists in acrylics and watercolours.  Angie with Painting at Maple Bay She spent a week painting around Osborne Bay and Saltspring Island during the first week of August with Kelsey presenting painting to birthday boy.her daugher Kelsey. They stayed at Osborne Bay and painted at the marina at Maple Bay.  Kelsey painted a beautiful sailboat and thAngie Roth McIntosh painting Three Boats in Acrylicen on hearing that it was the son's birthday presented the Kelsey McIntosh acrylic painting of boats at Maple Bayyoung fellow with the painting of the family boat.  Needless to say he was quite delighted.  Kelsey and Angie explored Saltspring and got some greatAngie Roth McIntosh www.WorldArtTours.net van is only car on ferry photos to paint from their kayak in Ganges Harbour.  We had a private ferry ride back from Saltspring Island when our vehicle was the only one on the ferry and there was only one other couple on board.  Imagine how much it would have cost us to charter that ride??

Angie was having fantasies of living i
n this lovely float home in Genoa Bay (one cove north of Cowichan Bay Lovely float home at Genoa Baynear Duncan) and painting these lovely coastal scenes all summer long!  Unfortunately  the weather isn't always this fantastic.  They also took the ferry to Thetis Island and got great photos while paddling around Telegraph Harbour.  What a great place to paint.  The little cabin at the Osborne Bay campground was absolutely perfect and in the ideal location for the region.

Painting in Stewart BC/Hyder Alaska

Angie's van at the Bear GlacierIt was a delightful summer in early August 2011 that AngieAngie at the Bear Glacier on way in to Stewart BC was joined by artists from around western Canada.  Stay tuned this winter for a report on that.
Those wishing to go up to northern BC will probably have a cha
nce to paint with Angie most years in the beginning of August before the Bear Festival.  Contact her now to Angie Painting in Stewartorganize your spot for 2012.  In 2009 she  was with a few Okanagan artists and an artist from Smithers and worked mostly in watercolours.  Here are some of theYellow House Watercolour on 6th Ave. in Stewart works she did, concentrating on location painting around the village.  These were shown at the 2010 Bear Festival in Stewart.  The yellow house was located on 6th Ave., right behind Angie's art retreat and is now in possession of the owner of the delightful home. 4th and Brightwell Ave., Stewart BCAnother day they headed out to paint at the corner of 4th and Brightwell--the equipment is still there but it is definitely looking a little more industrial due to all of the mining exploration company development around town in 2011.  One day some of the other artists wanted to go and see theHydee the Hyder Bear bears at the Hyder Viewing Platform at Fish Creek in Alaska.  Can you believe it, the artists who stayed to paint in downtown Hyder Alaska were busy working and this amazing little black bear In the Mist, Pavilion Walkway, Stewart BCcub peaked its nose around the corner of the old building. Not wanting to meet the Mama we quickly packed up.  I later saw the same little cub wandering around the dock area and worried it had no mother. I lifted out the dark paint to put the cubs face in behind the pink flowers.  Happily at the Bearfest in 2010 I found out that the little bear cub had been rescued.  Her name was Hydee, the Hyder Bear.  In 2010 I was delighted to go out to the log yard one evening and worked from life aPainting the bear river from the log yard 2010nd painted the estuary at the mouth of the Bear River.  Summer light is late in Stewart with it light out almost until 11 pm so the evening light was great. Bear River Estuary I finished this little 18x24 acrylic gem up in my studio.  Check out my gallery of inspiration on the right and see what you can paint in the Stewart area.  Contact Angie to get more information about coming up to Stewart to paint.   Check out some highlights from the 2010 festival and paint out here.

When I arrived in Stewart Aug.1, 2011 I found out that they had had 17 miserable days of rain.  Luckily I brought the sun and it was lovely for much of the time I was there out painting, giving me vistas of the beautiful mountians.

ART RETREAT OF THE NORTH

Artist Angie McIntosh has created a simple rustic painting studio in an old house in Stewart BC which is near some of the most scenic painting locations of Western Canada and  Alaska, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.  In the summer of 2008 artists from all around gathered together to paint in this amazing inspiring location and join McIntosh for a painting retreat. Read about the first Bear Festival in 2007. Coming soon will be a post of our painting there in 2009.   It is wonderful to be in the north in the summer and early fall to paint. If you wish to participate next year contact McIntosh .  Remember the wonderful old days when Group of Seven artists inspired each other on painting trips to the Canadian countreyside?  Angie was also inspired by walking through Renoir's home in southern France. The comraderie and inspiration felt and created by the artists who met at Renoir's home must have been amazing.  Seeing the art works left in the rooms by his artist friends who would visit and paint moved her and so she is trying to create a similar environment right here in northern BC.  Click here to learn about joining McIntosh as an artist in residence at her art retreat in Stewart, BC, in northern Canada, minutes from Alaska.  Please note that the Art Retreat of the North is not available for commercial rental or as a B&B--it is Angie's place of art and creativity.  If you wish to work there or join other artists there you must contact Angie first.  Email or phone in Canada 250 809-7932.

Painting Process
2011 has been a busy year.  Later you'll get details of Angie's trips to China and the artists she painted with in Stewart this year (2011).  But for now how about checking Angie working on underpaintingfor Hyder Main Street #2out her acrylic painting process.  Here she worked in her studio when the weather in Stewart was poor in 2010.  This is the second version of the main street in Hyder Alaska which you seeTonal understudy for Hyder version 2 as you drive in to the southern tip of the Alaskan panhandle near Stewart.  In this year there was a fair bit of smoke in the air from distant fires which hazed out the mountainside in the sunshine.  Hyder Main Street #2 by Angie Roth McIntosh in acrylicAfter finishing the underpainting some careful colour is added in. Here is the   finished painting of Hyder Main Street Version 2. This Angie leading workshop at the pavilion 2010
painting is for sale if you have some special memories of Hyder or a journey through Stewart you might like to remind yourself of.  Hopefully you weren't someone who walked in to a big black bear that was hanging around at the door of the Glacier Inn in Hyder at breakfast time.  While I warned some people walking down the road, I wasn't going to push the bear aside to to warn people inside.  Wouldn't that be a shock to walk out into a bear.  I guess he liked the smell of breakfast from the kitchen.  Unfortunately I had just seen this bear eating a bag of garbage across the road so you know this bear has become a pest.  I heard they were bringing in the bear trap.  Someone should help the residents of Hyder fence off their garbage dump which is located just beside the tiny village downtown.  It is a terrible attractant to the bears and is turning alot of bears into nuisance bears.  I would never camp in a tent in Hyder.
