Angie Painting in Shangli China
2012 Has been a Huge Year!!!
So much has happened in 2012! So many
things to tell you about and share--so many journeys around the south
Okanagan, to the Rockies, to China and even amazing animal encounters!
First of all my biggest journey in my art--I started to paint in
oils. It has been a timely and exciting path, learning to master
a new medium. Although I continue to also work in acrylics and
watercolours, I have added oils to my repetoire. I am really enjoying
the buttery texture and the wonderful soft blending of the
medium. I had been wanting to take them up for quite some time to
over come the problem of the paints drying out while I am working
outside, en plein air, as the acrylics do, which makes things very
challenging, especially if out in the warmer dry weather of
summer. The year has included the launching of my daughter
into her new career as a teacher and my son pursuing his dreams to self
sufficiency and working to learn about alternative energy technology,
along with alot of fun painting and some very sad family times with the
loss of yet another family member, my dear brother, a fighter who had
survived for 36 years on dialysis. It has been a difficult couple
of years for our family so I am glad my art keeps me extremely busy!
In
February I headed down to Phoenix and got myself set up with a
fantastic two piece Sienna Plein Air painting Easel. It has a
nice little foldable storage box that clips to my tripod easel and
holds my odourless solvent and
paints. My first use of the box was painting an old style
Mexican fountain at my Scottsdale hotel. We then headed north to
the beautiful Sedona area and painted the beautiful stream and red
rocks at Slide Rock Park. I have found it to be a real asset
for my outdoor painting and helped move me to the next stage of
my journey attempting to master the slippery medium of paint!!!
In
April I co-led the Plein Air painting workshop of the Meadowlark
Festival with local artist Loraine
Stephanson. Again, wonderful grasslands ecologist and author Don
Gayton inspired the group with a
little walk about in the area above Vaseux Lake. My son Kieran, his
girlfriend Ashley, my daughter's boyfriend Brennan, and my friend Mija
along with several other great folks all came out and had a wonderful time
painting, despite painting and especially in the outdoors being a new
experience.
In
May I headed back up to my art retreat in Stewart and got in some tremendous painting in
oil. I managed to capture the lovely snowy peak of
the glacier from my studio window and managed to brave the cool
sunshine outside to paint a fantastic view of the Portland Canal
estuary by town with the wonderful overhanging glacier.
Penticton Plein Air Group
My goal to gain some mastery of the
oil medium was to finally get a plein air
painting group going in
Penticton at the
end of May. We began meeting in the spring and usually 4-6 of us
headed
out all over the south Okanagan on Tuesday mornings at
7 AM to catch
the morning light and on Thursdays at 3 pm to catch the evening light. More than a dozen different
artists came out over the season.
We carried on for the whole year on this schedule until November when
we decided to go on to winter hours once a week. We meet by the
Starbucks near Quality Greens by the Golf Course in Penticton now at
noon on Thursdays and usually work until we are too cold or it is too
dark before 5 pm now. There
is no cost and the group decides where to go to paint
depending on the weather and light
conditions. We have been all over
Summerland, Penticton, Okanagan Falls, Peachland, and even
Osoyoos. If
the weather
is severely adverse, meaning wind and rain or freezing cold
and snow and there are too many people to fit in
my mobile studio the
group will then relocate to paint indoors at the Shatford Centre in Penticton
as Director Jane Shaak has been kind enough to open the studio to our
group. It has been a pleasure to meet all of these
wonderful artists and to get out and see the local countryside.
All of the artists feel that the process of working from life has
really benefitted their painting skills. I am delighted that it
has allowed me to create a wide body of work in the medium of oils and
I will be posting a gallery of my oil paintings and more interesting
stories of our journeys painting this year.
In June I had a quick trip to Victoria for my daughter's graduation from UVic as an elementary
school teacher. Her grad present was a couple of days of Plein
Air Painting around the Greater Victoria area. We learned the
delicate art of two people painting in the front seat of a very tiny
Toyota Rav 4 because it was too windy and rainy for us to work
outside. Amazingly we produced some nice work, getting in 3
sessions in 2 days.
July brought a whirlwind and very exciting tour through the Rocky Mountains
to paint with friend Mija in Banff. I stopped along the way to
paint in the foothills near Carstairs and had a wild encounter with a
120 ft. wide industrial spray that nearly cost me my life--I have been
charged by
a grizzly bear while going out to paint near Merritt before but never
did I think that I would be almost
taken out by a massive spaceship looking piece of farm equipment.
After a quick stop to pick up some of my work from Artbeat Gallery in
St. Albert, Alberta I had a couple of sessions
of plein air painting in the Jasper Rockies and the most awesome
experience watching a huge mother grizzly nurse her cubs in the
wilderness along the windy hillside road on the way to Mount Edith
Cavell. She was quite irritated by the youngsters and ended up
attacking one of the tiny babies. Amazingly in a once in a lifetime
experience I caught this on video and luckily the little guy seemed to
survive. I hope to be able figure out how to post this so you can
all watch this. I guess with my many bear experiences it is time I
start work on a big grizzly painting. My paintings of the Rockies
are available at the Lloyd
Gallery in Penticton.
My Autumn was filled with a terriffic journey to China in September and
October. I returned to some great autumn plein air painting in
the Okanagan. You can check out some of the images of me there in
October when the weather was nicer to paint outside!
Stay tuned for future stories about many of these wonderful
journeys! And, if you have time, why don't you come out and paint
with us--it's free unless we have to go inside to work. Then
there might be a small fee to pay for the arts centre.

ART RETREAT OF
THE NORTH
Artist Angie McIntosh has created a
simple rustic painting studio in an
old house in Stewart
BC
which is near some of the most scenic
painting locations
of Western Canada and Alaska, in the
beautiful Pacific Northwest. In the summer
of 2008 artists from
all around gathered together to paint in this
amazing inspiring location and join McIntosh for a painting
retreat. Read about the first Bear
Festival in 2007. Coming soon will be a post of our painting there in
2009. It is wonderful to be in the north
in the summer and early fall to
paint. If you wish to
participate next year contact
McIntosh
. Remember the wonderful old days when Group
of Seven artists
inspired
each other on painting trips to the Canadian countreyside? Angie
was
also inspired
by walking through Renoir's home in southern France. The comraderie and
inspiration felt and created by the artists who met at Renoir's home
must have been amazing. Seeing the art works left in the rooms by
his
artist friends who would visit and paint moved her and so she is trying
to create a similar environment right here in northern BC. Click here to
learn about joining McIntosh as an artist in residence at her art retreat in Stewart, BC, in
northern Canada, minutes from Alaska.
Please note that the Art Retreat of the North is not
available for commercial rental or as a B&B--it is Angie's place of
art and
creativity. If you wish to work there or join other artists there
you must contact Angie first. Email or phone in Canada 250
